Welcome to the BC NDP’s 2022 end of summer survey

Our government has been working to put people, and what they need first. That’s why Premier John Horgan and our BC NDP MLAs lowered ICBC rates and sent out rebate cheques to drivers, and why $10 a day childcare is being expanded. It’s why we’re bringing the speculation and vacancy tax to more communities to create more homes for people, and why we keep building primary urgent care centres where people live so that they can get healthcare close to home.

This has been a busy year as we continue rebuilding the economy and focus on supporting people. We’ve had two by-elections, and the Party’s leadership race is underway. A new leader — and premier — will be elected this fall.

Our BC NDP government will be sitting in the legislature again on Monday, October 3, so we want to take this time to check in with you. As we head towards fall, we want to hear from you about how we’re doing and how you see the future of our province.

Premier John Horgan has asked the federal government to step up and pay its fair share to improve healthcare for all of us. Do you support this?

Our economy should work for everyone, not just the top one percent. That’s why we’re investing in people and jobs. Which initiatives do you think are the most important? Select up to three.

Funding for high-speed internet in remote BC First Nations communities across the province so everyone can participate in the digital economy. Investing in 100,000 new jobs over the next 10 years through infrastructure projects like schools, hospitals and fixing our roadways and bridges Expanding the speculation and vacancy tax to more communities so that more people can find housing in places they choose to work and live. Raising minimum wage to $15.65 per hour — the highest in all the provinces. Making it easier for workers to unionize so that their workplaces are safer and they have a say about their work schedules, wages, and benefits. Ensuring workers can stay home while they’re ill by making paid sick leave permanent for all BC workers. Expanding affordable childcare so that more people can participate in the economy. Investing more than $93 million to provide early childhood educators with a raise. Doubling the number of provincially subsidized spots for students studying to become veterinarians to help fill jobs and make sure there is care available for farmers or families needing to bring an animal or pet to a vet.

We know affordability is a huge concern for British Columbians, and there is more work ahead of us on this issue. Which initiatives have helped you or your family? Select up to three.

Building 6,800 new student spaces to create affordable housing on post secondary school campuses so that the pressure on the rental market is reduced. Providing rebate cheques from ICBC to assist with the high cost of gasoline earlier this spring/summer. Approving the $3.94-billion rapid transit project to provide high-quality and low-cost transportation for tens of thousands of people in Surrey and Langley. Making transit free for children aged 12 and under so families can travel more affordably. Building affordable rental homes in communities throughout BC. Lowering car insurance rates and providing rebates to help make it more cost-effective for drivers. Expanding affordable, $10 a day childcare across the province. Providing $60 million to help school districts to expand school meal programs and make sure students have school supplies they need for a successful year.

Is there a different affordability initiative that has helped you, or that would help you or your family?

From devastating forest fires, to floods and landslides, to record-setting temperatures: climate change is here, and it’s happening in BC. Our government is taking actions to support our environment and protect BC. Which initiatives do you think are most important? Select up to three.

Providing new funding for farmers and ranchers to help them adopt regenerative agriculture practices, improve their drought resilience, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Investing $10 million in the CleanBC Plastics Action Fund to keep plastic pollution out of waterways and provide made-in-BC solutions to reduce plastic pollution while creating new products and jobs. Investing $2.1 billion in making sure that BC communities, roads, and infrastructure are built to be resilient and prepared for climate change. Investing $1 billion in CleanBC — the most ambitious climate plan in North America — to fight climate change, decarbonize our economy, and make clean energy and transportation. Banning single-use plastics, like grocery store bags and take away cutlery, so that less waste is produced and less plastic ends up in our environment. Taking action so that more products, from electric vehicle batteries to fire extinguishers, to mattresses, can be recycled. A $30 million investment to continue to improve BC’s watersheds, with half that funding going to watershed restoration projects led or co-led by First Nations.
